WHY DO I NEED AN EQUINE OPHTHALMOLOGIST?
If your horse has an eye condition which is not resolving, appears to be worsening, or is recurring without a complete explanation. Ophthalmologists are often consulted in prepurchase examinations to better predict future changes of an abnormality found at the prepurchase exam, before the purchase is completed. Many horse owners have questions about their horse's vision, because of strange behavior, or to be certain that there is no vision problem before treating reluctance as a training issue.
Veterinary medicine has advanced rapidly in recent years, and veterinarians' and owners' perceptions have changed dramatically. Awareness of the care and treatment which is now available depends on exposure to that knowledge: if you don't know about it directly, you rely on those around you. Peace of mind is high on the lists for most horse owners, and we all appreciate exploring additional options when it comes to our horses and our own comfort and welfare
Blindness is another common concern. Loss of vision can be accompanied by substantial pain, which may be difficult to diagnose without appropriate instruments. For example, glaucoma may take months to years to result in visible changes although the high pressure in the eye is uncomfortable (or worse) from almost the beginning.
